Lubomyr Chabursky: Personal and Professional Development

Lubomyr Chabursky, сonsultant of management and business strategy, lawyer, was the guest-speaker at the second English Club meeting.

“Living is not for be someone, it is just for do something”

It is not enough simply to “be” someone by the profession. We must do something, manage our life for our stature, and in favor of others.

Lubomyr Chabursky gave us basic tips to be successful in our personal development. There are some of them.

We must know what are our skills and make a “toolbox” of them. We should combine this “toolbox” for many skills experiences. It is the only way not to get stuck.

We have to broaden our thinking to recognize what is beyond. We had not narrow ourselves to traditional skills boundaries.
We should be persuasive and have particular value proposition for everything we do: project, work.

Everyone can be a businessman. We just need to figure out in which way our skills can be useful for others and achieve these objectives.

We have to establish our credibility by degrees, work experience, accomplishments, references.  Cold call give a chance. Organize to speak.

Ashton Kutcher’s  Speech (Teen Choice Awards 2013): “I was always just lucky to have a job. And every job that I had was a stepping stone to my next job and I never quit my job until I had my next job. And so opportunities look a lot like work”.

“Build a life – don’t live one, build one – find your opportunity”.

You will never leave a stepping stone until you finish it. However, your current position can only be a good stepping stone if you figure out what is success for your current project or task.

Constantly seek advice and recommendations. Remember that everyone likes to be asked for advice, especially elders.

Park your ego outside: nobody is interesting in your problems and excuses. Avoid gossips at the workplace.

All bosses like initiative workers, which could not only identify a problem, but also brought to the table possible solution to this problem.

Find your passion. If you do not have it think over the things that you can do to generate it. Experience of doing different things.

Facebook full of selfies of people been somewhere.  But what have they done? Instead of watching them, read theukrainians.org. There you can find inspirational articles about responsibility, success and rules in life which they  don’t mind breaking.

Lubomyr Chabursky also proposed us interesting Regrets thought experiment: we had to imagine ourselves 85 years old – looking back on our lives and find main regrets about we hadn’t done or had done. As the result -in real life we need to live according to our answers.

He also asked: Which expectations you are ready to live with?

( I think that for me these are only expectations of my parents, but they gave me a full freedom to be whoever I want, just wanted me to become a good person)

Nowadays possessions define who we are.  People are becoming more materialistic. “I was in your new shopping center “Forum Lviv”.  Do you really like it? People there imagine themselves  bying things they do not need. But life is to limiting comforts to live according to personal needs”. We should avoid comparing ourselves to others.

He provided us with compelling human traits, which we have to develop in ourselves: kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, integrity.

“Almost everything-all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure-these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart” Steve Jobs

So we must be free from hang ups, inhibitions, embarrassment.

Lubomyr Chabursky also told us about tough moments in his life.
When he got his lawyer degree he wanted to become politician. But suddenly the fall of brilliant wall occure: he couldn’t associate himself with one special party.

He was accepted to Oxfords masters in law, but his family  did not have not enough money to pay for it.

Tips to make project more practical to implement.

He gave us example of Climate change forum in Kyiv. There was a need for trashcan for cigarette butts which became the basis for a new project.

Think over: Who needs it? Why should the person you are talking for to care?

Do not be demoralized that something may be not interesting in. Do not become dogmatic. Do not seek for quick fixes.

Thus, the second English Club meeting become inspiring lecture!
